EN CalArts has a long history of graphic design students designing and printing posters for on-campus visiting artists and designer lectures, and  events across the different departments at the University.

As a student, I had the opportunity to design many posters for CalArts events, five of which have been included in ‘Inside Out & Upside Down’ CalArts Archive Posters 1980-2019’, a collection curated by Michael Worthington. It is currently on display at the Redcat centre and online. The collection has also been published as a book, showing over 500 posters from the CalArts archive.

The collection features the work of a range of influential figures in Southern California graphic design from the last half century. Among these are numerous CalArts alumni and faculty; April Greiman, Ed Fella, Denise Gonzalez Crisp, Geoff McFetridge, Brian Roettinger and Andrea Tinnes among others.

The exhibition at RedCat, and its accompanying publications, offers a critical look at CalArts’ role in the history of contemporary graphic design as it also reckons with issues of representation and race in the field. The Publication is available on the CalArts Archive website.
